Why Are There Republican Atheists?

This is the subject of a post at Atheist Revolution. I have to laugh that anyone would even need to ask that question, but since I happen to be a Republican atheist, I'll answer it. First, I should point out that that vjack, the blogger in question, largely answers the question himself in the post. The question was raised by someone who e-mailed him, not he himself. But in the post he does ask a more specific question:
What is it about the Republican Party that appeals to you so much that you are willing to disregard their stance on church-state separation and other concerns common to atheists?
That's easy. In the spectrum of issues I care about regarding U.S. policy, that one comes in way down the list. On most more important issues, the GOP is either far superior, or at least the lesser of two evils. Although the Democratic party may favor my position on certain issues, taken as a whole, my policy ideas are far more aligned with the Republican party than they are to the Democratic.

In my opinion the supposed danger of the religious right is hysterically overblown on the left. The U.S. as a whole has gotten more secular over the years, not less, and the Christian majority has been diluted. The Christian right is a nuisance, not a serious threat. I view their influence in the GOP as nothing more than an annoyance -- sometimes a major annoyance to be sure -- but nothing that would make me even consider joining the Democratic party, which I oppose in principle on almost every issue other than some social ones. Both parties have their obnoxious fringe elements among their bases. But I'll take the religious right any day over the hardcore anti-American left that infests the fringe of the Democratic base.

  1. What are the top three issues you find are important and properly handled by Republicans? Feel free to expand beyond three.

  2. Foreign policy, defense, and taxation. That doesn't mean I think the GOP is great on those things, just better than the Democratic Party.

It would actually be much easier for me to narrow down where I think the Democratic Party is better, since as I said in the post, overall I'm much more aligned with the GOP.

  4. I have a question; what do you consider to be anti-american?

  5. "OK, where is the Democratic Party better? "

Abortion rights and issues involving sexual freedom. It's also better on gay rights, and on church/state issues involving Christianity.

"I have a question; what do you consider to be anti-american?"

Other than the obvious, people who despise pretty much everything about America, especially the things that have made it the the most powerful nation on earth. Americans who don't like American power, think the U.S. acting in its own interests is evil, think our system is generally evil & oppressive, and would like to turn the U.S. into a facsimile of their favorite foreign nation of choice.

Then there are those who look to blame America first for international problems, see our country as especially racist, sneer at the very idea that the U.S. is a force for good in the world, and at patriotism in general. I could go on...

Very well said...I feel the same way about parties in my home country of Britain who seem to hate us, our way of life and anything good about our culture and history

I am also a Republican Atheist. Though deeply disappointed with the religious infestation of the Republican party, I don't see myself voting for candidates representing any other party. Ironically, the Presidential candidate of the Republican Party that I will be voting for, has stated that an Atheist cannot have morals. Having said that, I am sure that Atheist Republicans will grow in numbers. COUNTRY FIRST.

    1. "Country first"...REALLY? Very bumper sticker, but isn't based in reality. GOP policies have destroyed the middle class and will continue to do so if this country doesn't wake up and vote them ALL out of office. They're quickly taking over school systems and bringing creationism into the classrooms, privatizing schools to get religion into the curriculum, lowering wages, taking women's rights back to the 1950s, warmongering, killing the safety nets for millions that their policies have devastated already. More tax breaks for the "job creators"? Are you KIDDING me? OVER ten years of breaks for the wealthiest...WHERE ARE THE JOBS? Their goals to gift their corporate donors cheap labor, profiteer off eternal war, and replace Democracy with Theocracy. WAKE UP. TURN OFF FOX. They're LYING to you. Sheesh.

    2. Hey Nina, who's the president who has presided over the longest post-Great Depression slump, and whose policies have put us trillions of dollars in debt? Oh wait, Obama.

Not that Republicans are great, but come on, the Democrats are just as bad, if not worse.

However which would you rather have the opposite. the communist style super left wing BS that the liberal D bags put forth day after day. In my opinion the ball has swung over to the left way to far. Privatizing schools please. Yep that’s my biggest issue when i walk down the street is tripping over all the private schools. There everywhere damnit. rofl.

where are the jobs? yea right. I’ve turned down two in the past week. its called intestinal fortitude pull up your boots and go look! they are there! Just because you went to scroool and got a degree in philosophy from a Lib red diaper doper professor who told you to turn on, tune in, smoke weed, and drop out. who makes six figures by the way. Doesn’t mean there are no effing jobs. Do something other than sit on your record 99 weeks of unemployment and then go get on food stamps so I can pay you to do it. Give me a break.

    3. Ditto! I would love to hear a Dem. propose concise, insightful, logical, arguments, and I would respect that opinion. But, I'm so tired of people with cookie cutter, irrational, feelings-represented-as-argument, statements. I constantly ask myself when it comes to over-educated libs, how can they be so smart and yet so dumb?

  10. I'm a social conservative (against gay marriage, against affirmative action) etc. I guess you'd call that more of a "biological conservative".

I'm an atheist but virtually nothing about the Democrat party appeals to me. This whole moral/sexual liberalism (illogical movements) being associated with atheism (logical movement) trend is temporary. It's a reactionary alliance against "bible thumpers", but I really like to believe the majority of atheists are too mature to seriously agree with the Democrat, OWS, etc agendas.

  11. Religion has no place in politics. It shouldn't influence anyone's decision as long as the people are being treated fairly and good.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Love the fiscal, weapons ownership, and general support of the military that comes with republican ideology, yet when it comes to anything based on religion claiming myself republican feels like dragging my nails across the chalkboard.

Lets try putting equal into equal rights, I want American laws to be truly blind to gender, sexual preference, race, and a slew of other factors that currently make certain groups better or worse off than others in some misguided effort to force equality.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm also an atheist Republican, and also very Pro-Life, since you can't have any rights at all without first having the right to live.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I am also an atheist republican. There is religious nuts in small minorities on both sides if the sisle from huckabee and santorium to jackson and sharpton. an atheist will never be accepted truly in either party due to their religious beliefs. So in the end you must vote with who has the same beliefs as you on non religious matters.

I am pro choice and pro gay marriage. Even in tge most liberal of states gay marriage has been shot down. So i don't factor that in my thoughts. I agree with conservatives ideals on gun control, smaller government, defense and less spending. Most of all i agree with them on how poverty should be dealt with. I spent 5 years of my early 20's . Due to that experience and seeing how and why most of that population is in that situation i think people are given to much and not given enough incentive to improve that situation. I worked hard with two jobs while fighting my personal demons to,a point where i,am ten years clean and pretty well off without asking the government for a thing and expect the same from all. So i strongly believe in conservative principles like drug tests for welfare.

So in the end you have to choose the side ehos ideals most align with yours because you will never agree with all. As an athiest you will always have disagreements with both sides due to religion period

  15. Some of the republican's proposed economic policies make sense, like smaller government and lower taxes. However, we can't just cut social services and spend trillions on wars-people will suffer while defense contractors will get rich and innocent civilians will die overseas.

The democrats are better on policies to integrate all people into society, respect all religious beliefs, and freedom of women's reproductive rights.

The republicans have good ideas, but some people will not vote republican because of these crazy religious people who want to force their views on all people. Look at all of the protests by Christians when someone wants to build a mosque in small and large communities across the US.

  16. I am an atheist Republican too. (one time 17 year Born Again Bible thumper) I despise Christianity, but cannot stand the Democrat party. I am also a further exception as I am PRO-LIFE. I believe that logically abortion is an obvious, scientific, killing of another life form. (A human life) SInce much of my basis for rejecting the Bible ultinately was the realization of how horrible the OT was and how much killing a nd slaughter "god" was for, and that in my heart I was Pro-LIFE anyways. Google Pro-LIFE atheist, and Scientist Pro-LIFE and you will find some good reading. Romney must win.

  18. Regarding abortion, how does making it illegal stop people from getting one? If you want an abortion you'll probably get it whether or not it's legal. Coat hangers in back alleys tend to be very bad for the woman's health.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ryan, I agree with about the abortion issue, especially the wired hangers. Over the years I find myself leaning closer to the Libertarian platform, but with our two party system The republicans get my vote. Although, when it comes to smaller govt I'm not so sure that they follow though with their claims. I would like to see the republicans take the social issue off the table and just stick to the fiscal issue, but I think that is just a pipe dream.

    ReplyDelete
  20. As a republican atheist I think it all boils down to picking the economic and international issues over social issues. Not that economic and international issues are more important, just more urgent. Perhaps, I am naive but with time and education we can reduce religious zealotry. However, when the economy is on life support and the money is gone, no amount of time and education can repair it.

  23. The democrats attack the religious right, because it is the single biggest weak spot in the whole Republican party. I am an atheist. I am a registered Republican, and I normally vote Republican, because on most issues, I still agree with the party. The Democrats can't win in a debate about the economy, taxes, national security, or foreign policy. They are on thin ice when they open their mouths about gun rights, or crazy environmentalist policies. (Note I accept the climate is changing, but I reject that we have to destroy our economy because it will be a few degrees warmer) So they attack us where we are weak, and that is our religious base. They paint the whole Republican party as a bunch of religious nuts, all while ignoring the vast amount of urban churches that vote democrat in a far more solid block, then a Republican could ever hope to get from a GOP friendly congregation.

  25. I could consider myself non-religious in the sense that organization does not appeal to me idealistically speaking, but personally among people. There is community in religion, but ironically from my experience a stability in one opinion only. Anything else is often swept under the rug. I suppose it could be naive of me to say that morally, I support the republican party values the most, but ethically the democratic party values the most.

I don't tend to focus on religion unless I find it satisfying to me spiritually. That said, I know that it can be an easy form of manipulation for others to use in controlling people, but I feel it is a part of who I am as a human being: to want something to believe in. True trust is hard to come by in this world...

Relatively speaking, if everybody trusted everybody, then nobody would truly feel like they trust anybody.
People like me will open up to others about their views subjectively in person, and generally feel better about the decisions they make if they see their effects first hand instead of unfold on a screen. This is a risk that I take... although it has room for misuse. Accordingly, the more I know about what goes on in the world, the more I understand humanity as a whole, but the less I understand myself and my identity. Both, I think, are important and yet difficult to legislate in life.

  29. I am an Atheist Republican. I value fiscal conservatism and most social conservative views which aligns me with the GOP. I truly believe many GOP candidates & office holders are actually agnostic and or atheists at present; however, because of pressure from Christian conservatives, they do not come out as secular in fear of alienation. I believe this will change in the future as too many young potential members are secular & the GOP will be at a point where it will have to start appealing to a new secular conservative majority out risk becoming extinct as a party choice. If this happens, another right based conservative party will rise and take its place; this is a part of free market competition...a core component of the right. Thus, the GOP will eventually adjust on the secular issue realizing that secular republicans are tried and true on the base issues which ultimately makes our goals the same. The end.

  30. An atheist voting republican is like a black guy voting for a KKK member. If you do do this you are no better than a house nigger. Fight to get our party back but until we have some atheists in the GOP leadership it would be criminal to support them.
