HOT5 Daily 10/27/2010

1. "If Iran Gets the Bomb" Interesting interview.

Representative Sample: I sought out Martin Kramer in Jerusalem because I knew he would give me an analysis well outside the box on Iranian nuclear weapons. He’s a scholar, not a politician or pundit. And while he certainly has his opinions, he doesn’t conveniently fit into anyone’s ideological category.

2. "The True History of American Church/State Separation" Link to a good article in Smithsonian magazine.

Representative Sample: From the earliest arrival of Europeans on America’s shores, religion has often been a cudgel, used to discriminate, suppress and even kill the foreign, the “heretic” and the “unbeliever” — including the “heathen” natives already here. Moreover, while it is true that the vast majority of early-generation Americans were Christian, the pitched battles between various Protestant sects and, more explosively, between Protestants and Catholics, present an unavoidable contradiction to the widely held notion that America is a “Christian nation.”

3. "Smite Our Enemies!" Someone what Obama understands regarding politics doesn't translate to foreign policy.

Representative Sample: The President finally recognizes that we should support our friends and punish our enemies! I'm very heartened by this stunning grasp of the bleeding obvious.

4. "Will Medicare Bankrupt the U.S.?" Links to a long but informative analysis.

Representative Sample: In a lengthy, excellent piece over at the Center for Public Integrity, David Nather says that, the way things are going, it just might

5. "Incompatibility of science and religion? Who says?" Some good points.

Representative Sample: It is the preachers and theologians who have been crying ever since Darwin about the incompatibility of reason and religion. It is them who have forced this decision on people and they are coming to find out that the tactic has backfired. Yes, there are some who will stick to religion no matter what, but millions of others, faced with the choice given to them by religion, not science, that they must choose between faith and reason, will go where the evidence leads them.
