HOT5 Daily 10/10/2009

1. "Jihad and the state" An interesting Pakistani perspective.

Representative Sample: To vanquish the faceless enemy, the US and its allies have to achieve the harder goal of winning hearts and minds without which the war on terror is not winnable. This is because terror networks are difficult to locate, especially when they have society’s support.

2. "Spies Protest After Intel-Sharing Tools Shut Down" And shut down without a good explanation.

Representative Sample: the Office of the Director of National Intelligence is shutting down two of its more important collaboration tools, called uGov and BRIDGE.

3. "British intelligence service mistakenly recruited Al-Qaeda sympathizers" Oops.

Representative Sample: Are the British not capable of having an intelligence service without actually staffing it with the enemy? Or are they so anxious to put a Muslim face on England that they recruit recklessly.

4. "Researchers find dedicated taste bud for umami" It's kind of surprising this wasn't discovered earlier.

Representative Sample: In case you don’t know what “umami” is, it’s considered the fifth basic taste unit alongside its better known cohorts sweet, sour, salty and bitter.

5. "30% of American voters are idiots." That's sounds like a pretty low estimate.

Representative Sample: According to a new poll by Rasmussen Reports, 30% of American voters believe that Barack Obama is a "bipartisan President"
