Pointing Out the Obvious

Patterico has a post up called "Democrats Have No Right To Be Snooty About Rush Not Wanting the President to Succeed." The fact that Democrats are utter hypocrites in their attacks on Limbaugh is self-evident to anyone on the right, given eight years of BDS. But Patterico actually digs up a poll from August 2006 showing that 51% of Democratic respondents answered "no" to the question: "Regardless of how you voted in the presidential election, would you say you want President Bush to succeed or not?" And that's from random sample Democrats. If you polled the left-wing base, the no's would have been close to 100%.

  1. I'm not so sure. I'm a lefty liberal, but I didn't want Bush to fail. I just watched him making what I thought were bad decisions and vehemently disagreed with them. I work in Los Angeles, and while there certainly were a number of (liberal left) people that I work with who didn't want him to succeed, most of the ones I know were hoping for the best. If the president fails, well, so does America. (and in my opinion, it has been going down the wrong path...)

Granted, that's anecdotal, but the poll you cite is after nearly five years of what the left thought was bad judgement.

I remember that the right was calling anyone who disagreed with Bush right after 9/11 traitors.

That seems harsher to me than calling Limbaugh out this time around.

Well, the poll was only 51% of Democrats. So that certainly leaves a lot who didn't want Bush to fail.

"I remember that the right was calling anyone who disagreed with Bush right after 9/11 traitors."

I've seen that from both sides, depending on the issue. There was some Huffington Post piece just the other day calling Republicans traitors.

Limbaugh is well-deserving of a whole lot of criticism. But I think the "fail" comment was no big deal (or shouldn't have been).

  3. Yeah, I missed that Huffington Post piece.

I swear, political discourse in this country has really fallen apart- I appreciate your blog and am really glad I found it.

  4. I'm holding judgment. No major Democrat has publicly wished Bush fail; no Obama administration official has told people to "watch what they say," as Ari Fleischer did. It might happen in the future, but I find it unlikely, if only because Obama's not that kind of campaigner.

  5. spajadigit,

Thanks. I used to comment all the time over at Politburo Diktat (as did Alon). It was one of the few places where people with opposing political viewpoints could actually hold rational & mostly civil discussions. When it stopped updating, I started this blog.
