Jehovah's Witness at the Door

I was getting ready to head out to my office when I heard someone pounding on my door. I answered and found a man holding a flyer. Before I could say anything he handed it to me, and I immediately noticed it was a Watchtower publication. The last time a Jehovah's Witness showed up he attempted to launch into his proselytizing spiel, at which point I cut him off saying, "Don't waste your time, I'm an atheist and I'm totally uninterested." That produced a look of horror, and he mumbled something and took off. But this guy just wanted to inform me about some Easter event here in town, and mainly wanted to give me the flyer. It was nice to see a lower-pressure approach from one of the more aggressive religious organizations. Although he could have just stuck the flyer in my mailbox.

  1. FYI, Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate Easter as it has pagan origins. However, every year, they do invite the entire world to celebrate with them, the death of Christ Jesus life, since it has value for every living human. Jesus commanded that we "keep doing this" in rememberance of him...no eggs or rabbits or other symbols of fertility. Just reminders of what Jesus died for and why.
It is true that the visitor could have left an invitation in your mailbox but we prefer to invite people personally, when possible, since we feel it is serious and a serious ocassion deserves a personal invitation. I hope you will accept the invitation for April 9 in the spirit in which it was offered, out of love.

  2. Shawn,

Yeah, sorry. I saw that it was something on April 9 which I took to be simliar to Easter, so I wrote Easter.

"I hope you will accept the invitation for April 9 in the spirit in which it was offered, out of love."

I have no problem with polite religious solicitations, as long as they take no for an answer once I make my lack of interest clear.
