There was a quick reaction to Obama's speech from Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran. It can be summarized as follows: we hate the U.S. and we hate Israel. No speeches can change that. Until you stop acting in the U.S. interest and start doing what we think you should do, we'll continue to hate you.
As usual, this illustrates the futility of trying to "reach out" to people who simply don't want to talk. They want the U.S. to cave in to their demands. Khamenei also said,
"If you (Muslims) see that the Western world is talking more softly to you it is the result of public awareness and resistance in the Islamic world," Khamenei said.Iran's leader doesn't see an outreach, he sees weakness. I'd be willing to bet that his opinion is shared by many of those that Obama was hoping to impress -- particularly those who matter most -- the people in power.
